In the heart of Salzburg’s Old Town, at Kaigasse 40, lies a special place: Galerie Toplev. Founded in 2004 by the North Macedonian artist Nikola Toplev, it has been a space for vibrant, expressive painting with depth. Today, the gallery is run by his wife, painter Monika Toplev – with great dedication, artistic clarity, and a deep sensitivity for what moves art at its core.
After the death of her husband in 2013, Monika Toplev continued the gallery on her own – not only preserving the place but also turning it into a very personal expression of her own artistic voice. Her paintings – colorful, textured, intuitive – speak of nature and humanity, of change, memory, vulnerability, and inner strength.
The gallery regularly presents new works by Monika Toplev herself – often inspired by the landscapes around Salzburg, by plants, light, mountains, and their inner reflections. From time to time, she also invites fellow artists whose outlook and aesthetics resonate with the spirit of the gallery.
What sets Galerie Toplev apart is its authentic closeness to the creation of art. The artist is on site. The paintings are not created at the market’s request but in dialogue with life.
